What are STDs?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that you can get by having sex with someone who is infected with the disease. They are normally passed by having intercourse. They can also be transmitted through oral sex, anal sex or skin-to-skin contact. STDs can be caused by bacteria or viruses. They are caused by viruses which include herpes, hepatitis B, human papilloma virus (HPV) and HIV. STDs caused by bacteria include gonorrhea, chlamydiaand syphilis.
