Granuloma Inguinale
A rare form of sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the Calymmatobacterium granumolatis, which leads to inflammation of the genitals. Restricted to primitive populations such as those in Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Australia the disease/infection begins to express symptoms within 1 to 12 weeks after infection. The infection results in one or more red nodules that have raised lumps which if they break down forms a sore that can infect both men and women. Oral antibiotics such as doxycycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole are effective in its treatment that usually takes 3 or more weeks for elimination of the disease. This form of infection is quite rare in developed countries where hygiene is of nominal standards. In the US, less than 20 cases have been reported since 1999 which highlights the importance of personal hygiene for prevention of the infection from the said bacterium.
