Ecto-parasitic Infections (Crabs)

As the name implies, these STD arise from the occurrence of parasites on the pubic hairs or skin after contact with infected people. Transmitted through close physical contact, it can affect the skin, hair or both depending on the parasite involved. The two most common are Pubic Lice and Scabies, both of which are attributed to parasitic conditions and may transmit more serious diseases. “Crabs”, as pubic lice are more commonly known, they are small bugs that can be seen with the naked eye without any need for magnification. They can result in constant itchiness and severe conditions can leave the skin raw from the condition leading to infection.
Commonly treated with permethrin, a insecticide applied to the affected hair and rinsed off after a specified period of time. Other common treatment may include lindane, piperonyl butixide or a combination of the three for severe conditions. Clothing used by infected people should be washed in hot water to kill the bugs and sexually active people should have their partners also treated for the same parasitic organism for the organism is easily transmittable through intimate or close physical contact. This is necessary to eliminate the parasite, non-performance of which can only result in re-infection.
