Prevention is greater than cure

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are among the most common infectious diseases today. It can affect guys and girls of all ages and backgrounds who are having sex — it doesn’t matter if they’re rich or poor. STDs have become more common, partly because young people are becoming sexually active at a younger age and are having multiple partners with unprotected sex. Depending on the disease, the infection can be spread through any type of sexual activity involving the sex organs or the mouth; the infection can also be spread through contact with blood during sexual activity and even through skin-to-skin contact with an infected area or sore like herpes or genital warts. It can also enter the body through tiny cuts or tears in the mouth and anus, as well as the genitals. It is important to learn what you can do to protect yourself.

Just like many other diseases, prevention is key. It’s much easier to prevent STDs than to treat them. The only way to completely prevent STDs is to abstain from all types of sexual contact or have monogamous relationship (both sexual partners are each others’ only sexual partner). If someone decides to have sex, the best way to reduce the chance of getting an STD is by using a condom. Avoid anal intercourse for this is one of the causes of having the disease and avoid having sex during menstruation because HIV is passed more easily at this time. Learn the symptoms and have regular check-ups if you’re active.

Don’t let embarrassment at the thought of having an STD keep you from seeking medical attention. Some STDs if untreated can cause permanent damage, such as infertility (the inability to have a baby) and even death (in the case of HIV/AIDS).
